Adapt tried and true principles, practices and techniques

Adapt the training for nonviolent direct action usually required of all action participants, which is mature and robust (e.g. Rosa Parks had attended such training before she refused to give up her seat on that bus in Birmingham, AL), for various age groups and make it freely available throughout our society. Do not despair of reaching every citizen; any increase in the understanding, awareness and imagination it engenders ...more »

Elderly Preparedness Training & Disaster Kits Grant

I would strongly suggest and support a grant program that would assist the elderly and special needs community with providing disaster preparedness training along with providing them with a disaster kit that suits their needs. This type of training can be conducted in their homes at their request and would help the local communities with identifying those who will require assistance during a disaster.

Hands on Approach to Preparedness Training

A vast majority of the training opportunities is classroom based or online when it comes to preparedness. While it is important to to provide information in that manner we should begin to create a more hands on approach. People tend to learn more by doing than trying to absorb information given to them by a presenter.

Train the MD and Nursing students to deal with disasters

Require that all medical school students and nursing school students learn/practice disaster medicine and include them in exercises and other such events. We can also utilize the students for NDMS' DMAT teams. In disasters, they may not have all of what they are learning to use and need to have some idea of how to manage during a disaster.

Include responders' families in agency planning and...

Require all agencies that would respond to a disaster to include training and assistance for the families of the responders. We saw NOPD officers leave the city at the time they were needed most to take care of family and so on. Well, if the agency included training and other support to ensure the responders' families were taken care of or have the ability to handle the crisis, then the responders can focus on their job. ...more »

Course Lesson Plans

Make the training more learner friendly. Allow organizations to use local events or drills and after action reports in lieu of training exercises in the lesson plans. It would be more relevant and help keep the learners more involved in the learning.

Community Preparedness Initiative (CPI)

Community Preparedness Initiative One of the biggest struggles when it comes to preparedness is distribution of information that will actually grab the attention of those who are reading it. Anybody can build a website and post information but if no one knows where to find it then its meaningless. We need to start thinking outside the box and start a Community Preparedness Initiative (CPI). The concept of CPI would be ...more »

Train and equip first responders against nuclear terrorism/attack.

The average first respnder says "we are expected to respond to nuclear terrorism or attack but we have not been trained or equipped." What is needed is a leader like Governor Tom Ridge who would be willing to equip our first responders with SIRAD radiation monitors developed by the Department of Defense (goto TSWG.gov and search "SIRAD") Governor Ridge could also inform U.S. emergency management of the self-training ...more »

Training the Media

Training the media by inviting key TV reporters and anchors to drills and events so that they know how ICS functions, what is reasonable, worst case scenarios etc. Since most of these people have no idea who response mitigation, preparedness and response works they are the one spreading the fear and confusion. Instead of giving their opinion and speculating they might actually be able to give good advise and explain to ...more »
